FAQs

What will the day of my shoot look like?

The morning of your shoot, I’ll touch base via text and be available to answer any last minute questions. I’ll meet you at your desired location at our agreed upon time. If we’ve never met and you have the time, I’d love to take a moment to get to know you. I know it may be intimidating to meet a stranger and have them immediately start taking photos of you – so this is a time for you to share your story with me (as little or as much as you like) and for us to become more comfortable with each other. If you have kids, it’s also an opportunity for me to bridge the gap between me and your children. This time of connection will not be counted towards your total shoot time.

Then, we’ll get shooting! I’ll have created a vision board and posing guide for you and give you direction. We’ll shoot for your allotted time in various poses. I love taking suggestions from my clients, so any ideas you have are welcome!

If you have young children who you think may struggle or be fussy during our shoot, please don’t stress out about it! I’ll attempt to make our shoot as fun as possible. If you need a moment to change a diaper, feed baby, or have a private moment with your child, I won’t count it towards your total shoot time.

What should I wear?

Here’s the bottom line: wear what you feel both comfortable and beautiful in.

I recommend earthy tones that are muted - greens, grays, browns, tans, and cremes. Think warm and cozy cabin colors. These colors compliment my editing style, which emphasizes deep tones and natural skin tones. If you have a question about a specific piece of clothing, just send me a picture of you in it and I can give you my thoughts.

Patterns are amazing - Just be smart with them. For example, if you’re wearing a patterned dress, avoid putting your child or significant other in a pattern.

Textures, textures, textures! - I highly recommend incorporating some kind of rough texture into your outfits. This will help your photos be more dynamic rather than flat.

I’m not very good in front of the camera. Any advice?

Here’s the good news - I do not expect you to be good or comfortable in front of the camera. Most people don’t. It’s my job to make you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, and I promise to do my best. I’ll pose you and gently correct you to get the best shot. My hope is that throughout our time together, you’ll forget I’m there and focus on the connection you have with your significant other and/or children. The best thing you can do for your photos is look in love and be playful. Be yourself and everything else will fall into place!

Do I need to bring anything?

If we’re doing a maternity shoot, bring any props you’d like to include in the photos — ultrasound photos, baby shoes, stuffed animals, etc.

If we’re doing a family shoot and you have little children who may need some redirection, encouragement, or can we call them… bribes..? Bring some fun snacks and small toys that may help break up the time. If you think your child may be fussy, anything we can use to help soothe them is great!

Are you open to creative input?

I welcome and listen to any and all of your desires, expectations, and visions for your photoshoot. I love when clients have a dream for how they’d like their photos to look. If there’s a specific location you’d like to be at or pose you want to recreate, tell me! However, I don’t take input on my editing style. My editing style is reflected in my work — moody, romantic, underexposed, and cozy, with an emphasis on warm, earthy tones and gentle expressions from my subjects.

“We loved our family session with Melissa so much! She can turn even the least cooperative circumstances (ie, a sick toddler, and three kids in need of a nap) into beautiful photos, and my kiddos had so much fun with her. And the photos are amazing!!”
